# Earning points

> How to earn rank points through social activity, trading volume, and profit.

Points are the currency of the rank system. Everything you do on Faction Trade earns points, and your total points determine your [rank tier](/ranks/tiers).

## Point categories

Points come from three sources, each tracked separately on your profile:

    Earned every time you trade. The more volume you generate, the more points you earn.

    **How it works:** Every dollar of trading volume contributes to your volume points. Both opening and closing positions count.

    **Best way to earn:** Trade actively across different markets. Even small trades add up over time.

    Earned from profitable trades. Your realized gains translate into PnL points.

    **How it works:** When you close a position in profit, the realized PnL contributes to your PnL points.

    **Best way to earn:** Focus on quality trades with good risk/reward setups. Consistent profits compound into significant point gains.

    Earned through community participation. Chatting in channels earns social points.

    **How it works:** Active participation in chat channels contributes to your social points over time.

    **Best way to earn:** Join conversations, share insights, and engage with the community regularly.

## Total points

Your **total points** are the sum of all three categories:

> Total Points = Social Points + Volume Points + PnL Points

This total determines your rank tier. You can see the full breakdown in your [profile performance tab](/profile/performance).

## Tips for ranking up faster

1. **Trade consistently** — volume points are the most reliable way to accumulate points. Every trade counts regardless of whether it is profitable
2. **Complete monthly challenges** — [challenges](/ranks/challenges) offer bonus points on top of regular earnings
3. **Stay active in chat** — social points add up and contribute to your total alongside trading activity
4. **Focus on risk management** — profitable trades earn PnL points, and good risk management leads to more consistent profits over time
